There's an old saying that great things come in small packages, which sums up Pungwe very nicely. Intimate, immersive and authentic in every way - this is how an African safari should be savoured.
What do people come on safari for? It's a question we often ask ourselves. We think it's to discover the African wilderness, see iconic wildlife species in their natural habitat and soak up the essence of this incredible continent. So we have built our brand on giving them as much as possible of all of these things while making them marvellously comfortable, relaxed and at ease in their surroundings, without overdoing it. Pungwe offers everything you need for the perfect, authentic safari, and none of the stuff you don't need because for us, simplicity is all that's required to ensure the focus stays on the things that matter.
It's been in the same position for around three decades, and is the beating heart of Pungwe... As campfires go, it's as basic as it gets, but therein lies a magic that speaks volumes about Pungwe's ethos.
Fire has been at the centre of human civilisation since our species first mastered it and the fireplace has been a gathering place for people for untold millennia.
It moves us on a primal level, and around a fire is where we share stories and talk about the meaning of life and the universe and our place in it. Come and join us!
With only four tents sleeping a maximum of eight guests, Pungwe offers privacy and personal attention in an authentic African setting. Our large en-suite tents offer either twin beds or large king-size beds, cotton linen and fluffy duvets to luxuriate in.
The en-suite bathrooms feature stand-alone showers, baths, flushing toilets and African inspired hand basins. Hot water is provided by a “donkey boiler”- a wood-fired water heating system that has been used in bush camps across Africa for decades, providing a true “off grid”experience.
Spacious and airy, with tiled floors and thatching above to help keep things cool in the summer and warm in the winter, the tents evoke the spirit of the great explorers with their rustic charm and old-world style. At night, the tents are lit with oil lamps, adding to that authentic ambience. We provide a high-powered rechargeable LED light as well for reading.
Each tent has its own private verandah where you can sit and contemplate the wonder of the African wilderness that surrounds the camp. It’s the perfect spot from which to do some birding or enjoy a cup of coffee between activities.
At Pungwe Safari Camp, you are not going to go hungry! Despite its remote setting in the Manyeleti wilderness, the camp offers an impressive array of home-cooked meals, expertly crafted by head chef Carol Sibuyi. Using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, Carol creates dishes that have become guest favourites, blending authentic local flavours with hearty comfort.
Your day begins with coffee and rusks by the campfire before a morning game drive, with homemade treats like muffins and cookies to enjoy en route on your coffee stop. Back at camp, breakfast is a feast of fresh fruits, cereals, yoghurts, and a full cooked meal, prepared over the open fire. Afternoon tea offers sweet and savoury delights to keep you going until dinner.
Dinner is a three-course affair served al fresco, featuring starters like soups or salads, followed by a hearty main course, often a traditional braai or roast, and finishing with indulgent desserts. Special dietary requests are happily catered to, with advance notice, ensuring everyone enjoys the culinary magic at Pungwe.
